Legacy electricity meters being switched off

Some British homes have a Radio Teleswitch (RTS) electricity meter. The technology supporting these meters will be switched off after 30 June 2025.
Without this technology, RTS meters may no longer work properly. Your heating and hot water will stop functioning normally, and you could lose heating altogether.
You may have already been contacted about this over the last five years. But if you still have an RTS meter, your electricity supplier will contact you to arrange an upgrade to a smart meter before the deadline. It's crucial that you respond to this communication and schedule your upgrade to avoid any issues with your electricity supply. If you think someone you know, particularly a vulnerable person, might have an RTS meter, please encourage them to act now.
How do I know if I have an RTS meter?
You may have one if:
- your home has a separate switch box near the meter with a ‘Radio Teleswitch’ label;
- your home is heated using electricity or storage heaters;
- there’s no gas supply in your area, such as in rural locations or high-rise flats;
- you benefit from cheaper energy rates at different times of the day.
If you’re not sure if you have an RTS meter in your home, contact your energy supplier for help. Find out who your energy supplier is.
More information about the switch-off is available from Ofgem and Citizens Advice.
