Repairs and home improvements
We want you to enjoy living in your home and we understand that sometimes you might want to make improvements or alterations. Here’s an overview of what you need to ask permission for, as well as responsibilities around repairs.
Repairs
It’s your responsibility to maintain the inside of your home and carry out minor repairs, such as changing light bulbs and unblocking slow draining sinks, baths and showers. To help with this we have created a series of How to videos.
We’ll make sure any communal areas and the outside of your home are in good condition. We’ll also repair fixtures and fittings inside your home, such as heating systems and kitchen units.
To learn more about our repair responsibilities and what you’re responsible for, read this guide to our repairs and maintenance service.
You can also report and manage your repairs by registering for or signing in to your online account.
Home improvements
You can carry out some improvements and alterations to your home, but you must get our written permission before you start the work. You can do this by completing and returning our Home improvements and alterations form. If we refuse permission, we’ll always explain why.
There are some things we allow such as interior decorating, and some we don’t such as loft conversions.
There’s no charge for requesting permission. However, if the improvement you want to make requires significant involvement from a CHP employee or contractor, we’ll charge you for this.
If you make alterations to your home without written permission from us, you must apply for retrospective permission so that we can check the changes are safe and won’t have any negative impacts. There is no charge for applying for retrospective permission.
You can find more information, including examples of alterations we'll consider and those that we won't allow in our Guide to getting permission for DIY and home improvements. Or in our Permission for Improvements and Alterations Policy. You can read these by registering for or signing in to your online account.
