Life at CHP

Our customers are at the heart of everything we do, but we also want to make sure our employees are happy, healthy and have opportunities to grow.

Committed to our people

We’ve been recognised for a number of prestigious awards. In 2018 and 2020 we were ranked a Top 100 Not-For-Profit Organisation to Work for by The Sunday Times and named a Top 25 Housing Association by 24housing magazine. This year, we’ve been named a finalist in the Housing Heroes Award for Employer of the Year. We received this nomination because of our work to support our teams during the coronavirus pandemic.

Fostering effective working

We facilitate collaborative working and host a range of learning activities to develop our people, support their career aspirations and professional qualifications as well as encouraging team building. Learn more about our training and support.

Continuous improvement

We encourage employee participation on all levels, and we’re always open to new ideas or ways of working. We regularly survey our employees and ask each other for feedback so that we continually improve and build trust.

Recognition and reward

We believe in celebrating success and acknowledging our employees when they go above and beyond to help colleagues and customers. We have a robust employee recognition programme which includes:

  • a peer-to-peer recognition platform;
  • monthly ‘Stars’ nominations;
  • annual corporate awards.

Nurturing wellbeing

Employee wellbeing is very important to us and we aim to help our employees achieve a successful work/life balance. We recognise that people have other commitments outside of work and therefore have a flexible working policy in place to support those who need to adjust the hours or days they work. Please talk to us at interview about the flexibility you need so, where possible, we can accommodate this. We also encourage our employees to take their annual leave so that they can return to work recharged and motivated.

Free and subsidised sports classes are provided on our dedicated multi-activity outside space. We offer employees free fruit and refreshments, discounted gym membership and a cycle to work scheme. We also have a free, confidential employee assistance programme to support our people with any personal problems that might impact their work performance, health and wellbeing. Find out more about these and the many other benefits available to employees.

Giving back

Our volunteering programme, CHParticipate, was created because our employees told us they wanted to do more in giving back to local communities, protect the environment and encourage charitable activities. The programme allows employees to take time off to volunteer during work hours.

Promoting fairness

We’re a voluntary living wage employer which means we’re committed to paying all employees at least the living wage. We celebrate diversity, equity and inclusion and we’re accredited as a Disability Confident Employer.

Inclusion and reasonable adjustments

We’re here to support colleagues and candidates with disabilities, neurodiversity, and mental health conditions. We offer reasonable adjustments that make our workplace inclusive and accommodating, so everyone has the assistance they need to thrive. You can find more information about the support we provide in the following guides.

Green ambitions

We don’t want to simply stop at fulfilling our legal requirements for environmental performance. We have an Environmental Sustainability Strategy [pdf] 1MB that outlines our actions for 2020-2023, followed by the first phase of a longer thirty-year journey to 2050. We want to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050, to eliminate unnecessary waste by 2022, support sustainable communities and a sustaniable workplace, and increase the efficiency of our homes. We’ve done lots of work already towards these amis, including adding five electric vehicles to our fleet, with more to come.
